I prefer to critique middle grade (8-12), tween (10-14), and teen (12-16) novels or nonfiction.
I have done freelance editing for two publishers, and have also taught writing for over 25 years. I write a lengthy (4-6 page) single-spaced letter of comments to go with the manuscript critique, pointing out your strengths and weaknesses, suggested changes, plus writing instruction to improve the manuscript. If you'd like to request references, I can put you in touch with writers who have used my novel critique services in the past. I return edited manuscripts with critiques to writers within two weeks, usually much less.
I prefer the entire manuscript by snail mail, double-spaced and printed on one side of the paper. I make comments directly on the manuscript as I read. Electronic critiques are also available for overseas requests. I charge $40 per hour. On AVERAGE, a 25,000-word novel takes me about 6-7 hours. I ask you to include a $50 deposit when you mail me the manuscript, then the rest is due after I complete the critique. I send a bill for the remainder when I return the manuscript. Keep the bill for your tax records, as it is deductible as a business expense.
If this interests you, contact me, and I'll be in touch. I'll let you know when my next available opening is, as slots fill rather quickly throughout the year. If you don't receive a response within 48 hours, please send a second request.
